Tudor has captured the spotlight in the watch world with their recent sports collaborations, spanning F1, sailing, pro-cycling, and now football; today we turn our attention to the Black Bay Chrono Pink. This striking timepiece, with it's bold pink dial and limited availability, has quickly become a talking point. However, it’s not just its aesthetic appeal that has everyone intrigued.
The Black Bay Chrono Pink has seen an extraordinary surge in prices on the grey market, prompting questions about what drives such high premiums for this new model. To understand this phenomenon, we need to explore the factors of rarity, celebrity influence, craftsmanship, and the dynamics of the luxury watch market.
The Black Bay Chrono has always been a standout in Tudor’s line up, known for its strong ties to motorsport and professional diving. The introduction of the pink-dial variant adds a fresh, bold aesthetic to an already iconic model. Tudor’s decision to launch this watch just ahead of the Watches and Wonders fair in Geneva was a strategic move, ensuring it captured attention ahead of a week full of new releases.
One of the most compelling reasons for the high grey market prices is the watch's scarcity. Tudor has described the Black Bay Chrono Pink's availability as involving "a small number of examples to be produced."
While not officially labelled a limited edition, the implication of rarity has fuelled demand and speculation. Collectors and enthusiasts often equate limited availability with exclusivity, driving up the watch’s desirability and, consequently, its market value.
The watch’s pink dial isn’t just a random colour choice; it holds significant cultural and symbolic meaning. It’s a tribute to Tudor ambassadors such as David Beckham, who incorporated pink into the branding of Inter Miami CF, and Jay Chou, who has famously adopted pink as his signature colour. Additionally, pink is the jersey colour for the leader in the Giro d’Italia, a race sponsored by Tudor. These associations lend the watch a unique narrative and appeal that transcends its mechanical attributes.
Beyond its appearance, the Black Bay Chrono Pink is a robust timepiece. It features Tudor’s MT5813 movement, a COSC certified chronograph movement with a column wheel and vertical clutch, derived from Breitling’s B01 movement. This ensures high performance and reliability, further justifying its premium nature. The watch also boasts a 70 hour power reserve, is water resistant up to 200 meters and is one of the few Tudors to come on a 5 link bracelet, making it both a functional and fashionable choice.
The secondary or grey market for luxury watches often sees prices significantly inflated compared to retail, especially for models with high demand and limited supply. Initial listings for the Pink Chrono have seen the watch priced at several times its retail value, with the highest price on Chrono24 reaching £69,000!
The watch costs £4,880 from an Authorised Tudor Dealer, and £69,000 was the first price listed on Chrono24. The realistic selling prices of these watches seem to be between the £16,000 to £20,000 mark which is still a +275% increase on RRP.

As more of these watches hit the secondary market, prices may fluctuate. Initial hype often leads to sky high premiums, which can stabilise over time as more pieces become available. However, the inherent rarity and the strong narrative behind this watch suggest that it will continue to command respect and high prices. We recently visited our local Tudor AD to be told they had just one unit, which was promptly allocated to 'a top spending client.'
The high grey market prices for the new Tudor Black Bay Chrono Pink can be attributed to a combination of strategic rarity, cultural significance, superior craftsmanship, and the brand's prestigious heritage. As Tudor continue to collaborate, we may see this continued shift to rarer limited pieces that are perhaps investments for the future?
Strategic rarity seems the most likely: "Limited, hard to obtain, waitlists, exhibition only, top clients"... all words we've heard before? cough Rolex cough...
